Lee Jun Ki’s Exclusive SOHU Interview

Sohu: What are you busy with recently? Please tell us because everybody is very concerned about it. Have you chose a new drama or movie?
LJK: I just accepted a new drama offer not long ago but there is some editing to the script for now. Therefore, the shooting schedule is not confirmed yet. (Lee Jun Ki's assistant's cellphone rang suddenly and Lee Jun Ki started to play with the fox soft toy). When the schedule is confirmed, I will have to start my busy shooting of drama again.
Besides that, to have more interaction with the fans of Asia, there will also be some special plans. But I will still put my focus on the drama shoot, as for the movie industry, I don't have any idea now, if there is any roles that make me satisfied, there will still be a possibility. Everyone please look forward to it!
Sohu: You have been nominated for the 'Best Male Actor' in the Baeksang Awards this year. Do you have any confidence in winning?
LJK: To be able to get nominated with other seniors whom I respected, I felt very happy and honored. To be able to get nominated, it already shows the likeness of me from everyone. Thank you very much.
Sohu: In sohu.com, we did a poll in the popularity section for Baeksang Awards, your fans came to leave a message and vote everyday, and it has become a 'competition' between you and Song Seung Hun. Please tell us how you feel about this and what you want to say to fans who support you.
LJK: Song Seung Hun has always been my favorite senior. Although we are not close, but I hope that the both of us can achieve good results. Actually, to win or not to win a award is not that important, it will be good enough if I can work with Song Seung Hun in a good drama in the future.
Sohu: Do you prefer to have a heroic character when choosing a script? What type of work production do you want to try? Do you still want to try the pure romance work production again?
LJK: Ah... first of all, I don't really like dramas that are heart-warming like romance drama etc. Of course, that doesn't mean this kind of work production is easy to act. It's just that I like those with more contents which can bring out more sides of me to the audience. This is also what I want to work hard on.
Sohu: Will you have any restrictions out in the open during acting because of your fans?
LJK:(Laugh out loudly). Nope, I won't be like that. Besides that, I have not really come across any work production like that. If I really face this kind of situation in the future and there is a need for the drama, I will do my best in acting. Since, I also want to show more handsome sides of myself. But, (Laughs), who will look forward to it?
Sohu: You mentioned you only want to be an actor last time but now you are going to release an album. What caused the change of mind?
LJK: Actually, it's not changing my mind. It's just that in the beginning when I stepped into the industry, I wanted to focus on acting and to be recognized because of my acting skills, so I did not think much on singing in that area. Since I'm still young and I want to show everyone not only my acting skills, singing can be considered like extending my entertainment career. I don't want to restrict myself in a small circle and if I carry out any overseas activities, it will be better than only depending on acting.
Sohu: How do you find your singing skills?
LJK: In comparison with professional singers, I also don't have any outstanding areas, be it a singer or actor, success is achieved by working hard, if you say something like it's easy to become a good professional singer or actor, anyone who hears it will feel uncomfortable. Just like what I said before, being a singer is only one way to extend my entertainment career. But because I like music a lot I will treat it seriously.
Sohu: Are you better at rap, ballads or...?
Ah... I'm not sure about this yet but when I act, I like to face different kind of challenges.
Sohu: The fans think that black hair suits you more but it seems like you like to dye your hair, is that so?
LJK: Actually, when I don't have any work in hand and I'm resting, the situation of dyeing hair happens more, this can be considered a change of feelings. But I like black hair myself too.
Sohu: What is the necessities when you go out? Cellphone? Computer?
LJK: I will feel very frustrated if I can't go online and I also like to shop online so there must be a computer.
Sohu: Fans leave messages that if you want to be an actor anymore, you can be an ambassador, what do you think?
LJK: An ambassador, that will be very dashing. If I become an ambassador, I will work very hard in that area, I will also know Mandarin and English by then and I will also speaks them well. But I think that as long as Korean culture is introduced to other people from other regions, be it an actor or singer, it is also considered an 'ambassador' in terms of culture. If that really happens like what the fans said and I become an ambassador, I believe my acting experience so far will be a help. This is because it also means socializing with people.
Sohu: Although you are 28 years old but you don't look like one. What is the secret to stay youthful?
LJK: (touches his face first) First of all, I don't have any secret to stay youthful. Resting will be enough, it will be like reviving again, there's no special treatment, it's too troublesome.
Sohu: Previously there are plans to enlist into army this year and you said that instead of delaying, it will be better to go and return back early and this receives praises from everybody. So when are you enlisting and is there any confirmation?
LJK: There isn't a confirmation so far but when that time comes, I will go.
Sohu: Will you watch TV dramas when you are bored at home? Do you watch English, Japanese, Taiwanese and Hong Kong dramas? Do you see how the other actors act?
LJK: Yes, I will watch it whether it is a drama or movie. Sometimes, I will spend 8 hours and above to watch movies, dramas and interesting channels on the net.
Sohu: Are there any plans to organize a fan-meeting in China this year? Which month will it be at roughly?
LJK: There is a suggestion so far, but in terms of which city or when to organize it, it is not confirmed yet. Once everything is ready, I will inform everybody. Please wait patiently.
Sohu: Fans all over the world are doing charities for you, do you feel it? How do you feel?
LJK: I feel very touched and happy to see my fans started the charity events with initiative. I also want to get involved so there are plans to do charity events with the fans. I hope this will come true.
Sohu: Lastly, please say something to your fans from China.
LJK: Hello to everyone in China! (holds up the fox soft toy to say hi) it's a long time since I greeted everyone, the last time was during last year and it's really too long. Even for a short time, I hope there will be a fan-meeting in China to meet everyone. It will be better if we can do charity events together. Everyone, please continue to support me and stay healthy! (smiles and waves bye bye)

Q: Tell us about the opportunity to star as Gong-gil, “the man who is prettier than woman” in “The King & The Clown”?
A: Though I feel that I was lucky to star as Gong-gil, I wanted to convey – through perfecting my acting skills – my passion for acting. In the audition, I didn’t perform as well as the other participants. However, the director saw that there was potential in me.
Q: From the comments made by Director Lee Joon Ik that “Lee Junki’s charm has awaken.” and Director Che Joon Te that “Through Lee Junki’s fantastic facial expression, his eyes area able to convey any thoughts or emotions”, what then do you think of yourself?
A: Previously, it seems that the director wasn’t fond of my eyes. Maybe he liked it after my outlook transformation in “The King & The Clown”? Initially, I was told that I was only suitable for villain roles because of my eyes.
Q: Don’t you feel unhappy about your single eye lids?
A: Of course I did. I too used to want to have double eye lids through surgical means. But now, even though everyone is doing such facial surgery, I thought to myself that I don’t have to do this anyway. Like Rain who has not gone through such surgery, I want to try to live as I am, as a person with single eye lids. Now I feel contented. Besides, this eye issue doesn’t affect my acting skills, does it?
Q: Where do you think your charm lies in?
A: To me, it’s my nose. I like it.
Q: What’s the secret to maintaining a sharp chin?
A: There’s no secret behind it. To begin with, it’s an innate thing. Such sharp chin is indeed rare. Besides, there are some who dislike it. I was often asked about how I shave. But I don’t feel unhappy about such matters now.
Q: In “The King & The Clown”, you showed us a feminine side. In “My Girl’, “Fly Daddy” and “The Time of Wolf and Dog”, you showed us a masculine side. To which is your own character closest to?
A: I didn’t display my own full character in “Fly Daddy”. However in each and every character I play, a part of me is revealed. In “Fly Daddy”, due to the rebellious nature of the character I played, I may have portrayed a tough side but frankly speaking, I dislike such display of toughness.
Q: Chon Joonho, who acted with you, shared with us a secret that you are a very good drinker. Is that right?
A: Joonho is also a very good drinker. To tell you the truth, I drink with people whom I first met as this helps to create a relaxed and natural environment for building relationship.
Q: What do you do when you are drunk?
A: I will become cheerful and lovable and dance and shake.
Q: Any incident of you getting high after drinking?
A: There was once I was drunk. When I woke up, I realized that I was home. It seemed that I had a hangover from the previous night. When I had fully awakened, I recalled that I had danced in the public while in a drunkard state. Passerbys laughed along with me and some even make comments that I look like Lee Junki.
Q: What sports are you into recently?
A: This year I started playing soccer again. I like sports that guys typically like. I am in Taekwondo 3rd grade.
Q: In “Fly Daddy, Lee Mun Shik remarked that “Lee Junki not only has a charming appearance, he is also passionate about acting which makes him admirable”. What are your thoughts about this?
A: Young as we are, we must do our best in learning, shouldn’t we? This is what I feel while acting with seniors.
Yes or No Answer!
Q: Do you have times when you feel that you are sexy?
A: Yes. I feel so after a shower when I look at myself in the mirror.
Q: Which part of your body do you feel is the sexiest?
A: My arm.
Q: Honestly, did you expect that you would win the most popular new male artist 2006 award?
A: Yes. I really wanted to win this award. Initially, it was just a thought of mine. Later, I started believing that I could win the award.
Q: After you won the award, what did you do?
A: First, I wrote comments in my fan café (is this referring to his cyworld?). After that, I went out for a drink.
Q: Man from Busan has a violent nature. Is it true that you do not wish to be defeated when you get into fights?
A: I’ve never engaged in such violent acts before.
Q: How many persons can you fight against?
A: I’m not sure since I always fight together with my friend who is a strong fighter. But most of the time, it’s a 1 to 1 fight.
Q: Lee Junki is indeed manly. Which actor do you think is the manliest to you?
A: I feel more for the masculine strength displayed by Actor An Songi as compared to the fact that I’m a strong fighter.
Q: If you were given 1 month’s free time, what will you do?
A: I would want to travel. However after a while, I would think about preparation for fan meeting matters because I want to create my own performance stage. Also because Popping Hon Jun’s recent stage performance was a hit.
Questions From Fans
Q: Did you rap in the CM while dancing?
(Lee Junki suddenly rapped in front of the audience.)
Q: If I were to log into fan café and write a message today, will you reply?
A: Of course!
Q: How do you maintain such good complexion?
A: Have enough sleep, that’s all. I didn’t do anything special to take care of my skin.
Q: What are your plans in 2007?
A: Korean-Japan joint movie “Virgin Snow” and the movie “The Magnificent Holiday” will soon be released. From now on, I will work hard. I’ve heard words like “the actor with many possibilities” since ‘The King & The Clown” release. Thus, I will like to become an actor who is worthy of such comments.

Q: Did you take special notice of the Japanese market when you first started out?
Junki: I didn’t really consider that. As a new actor, I feel that it is important for me to stabilize my career in my home country (Korea) first. However, recently I received many more chances to go to Japan. From a personal point of view, I do like Japanese music and drama serials.
Q: Which of the Japanese dramas do you like to watch?
Junki: I find that Japanese drama serials are very interesting. Initially I watched Japanese dramas for the sake of learning the language. However, the more I watched, the more addicted I became…. such as “One Million Stars Falling from the Sky / The Smile Has Left Your Eyes” starring Kimura Takuya, “Pride”….there will be no end if I list down all those I liked.. (laughs)
Q: If this is so, who are the actors that you like?
Junki: Naturally I must not miss out Miss Aoi Miyazai, I like Joe Odagiri and Miki Nakatani too.
After which Mr. Lee Junki earnestly checks to see if the reporter had noted down correctly the names of the actresses he likes.
Junki: ahhh… it’s not spelt this way, its Miki… Naka. Ta..ni.
(This little boy does have a good memory for names… is he trying to correct the reporter’s mistake?)
Reporter: Right now, Lee Junki’s level of Japanese is sufficient for him to venture into the Japanese market. At the same time, you do like to watch Japanese drama serials, movies, music and Japanese variety programs. How do you feel about filming in Japan?
Junki: Although I feel that the promotional activities in Korea are very important, however I do learn even much more when I went along with my fellow workers to Japan , China and many other countries. It is especially so during my filming in Japan, when I noticed how professional others were while working.
As many of my fellow overseas actors helped me in many ways, this help to make filming process much easier.
Junki: As this time, we are presenting to Japan a remake of a show that most of the Japanese audiences are already familiar with, I’m a little nervous about it. I read the original version before the actual filming commences, and it was only after the filming ended did I began to appreciate the Japanese version.
As the Korean version of “Fly Daddy” places a greater emphasis on the love a father holds for his family, this realistic aspect feels even more real than one can imagine.
I guess that this is the difference you could feel as compared to the original Japanese version.

Q: Please let us know the reason for coming to Japan.
A: I’m here as I’m holding a FM in Japan and also at the same time promotional activities for “Fly Daddy “,as it is due to premier in May later this year.
Once news were received that Lee Junki will be in Japan for promotional activities for the premiering of “Fly Daddy” in May later this year, the reporters were excited and once the interview was over, pictures were taken against the beautiful blue sky as a backdrop.
Q: How do you feel about FD premiering in Japan?
A: Actually I’m feeling a little nervous. I think it will be better than the original Japanese version and the audience should like it. Of course there is pressure too as the Japanese audiences understands the original version, and I hope this movie will touch the hearts of the viewers.
__________________________________________________________________________
Q: What type of a photo shoot was it?
A: The pictures are to be used later to complement the interviews reports.
Q: How many media companies are here for the interviews?
A: Well, it seems that there are no lesser than 30 media companies here.
Q: What do you feel are the differences between here as compared to while you were in Korea?
A: The reporters could interview me anytime while I’m in Korea. It’s different for Japan, as I’m only here occasionally. We have to group many of the interviews together in a short time, and its’ really tiring. However this means that I will gain further exposure and I must work very hard, to let everyone know and understand about Korea’s films.
__________________________________________________________________________
A 2 days 1 night fully packed with promotional activities. The Japanese media involved came together, gathered in the same compound and waited. After the interviews and the photo-shoots were completed, there were more interviews and photo shoots after Lee Junki went back. It won’t be enough even if there were ten Lee Junkis.
Q: Are you tired after all the interviews and the photo shoots?
A: Yes, I’m very tired.
Q: What is the most asked about question today?
A: From head to toe, its all the same! Hahaha… actually I wanted to say something else, but it seems I’m just joking... ahhh... really... so tiring…
However, another round of interviews are about to commence again. Even the staff workers from Korea are tired. However our Lee Junki is still very strong! At last, another day of non stop activities had ended and all Junki can think of is to go back to his hotel room
Q: It seems that there are really many interviews you have to attend, aren’t it?
A: Actually there were more interviews when we were promoting “The King and the Clown” previously. Initially I thought that I could probably manage this, but it turns out I’m still very tired

(FEBRUARY 2007) Sina Interview
Following the success of 'The King and the Clown', the one and only Lee Junki whose popularity is sweeping across Asia is here from Korea to attend the Chinese TV show specially organized by Shanghai Media Group (SMG) and Shanghai Dragon TV. It is scheduled to be broadcast on 18th of February at 7.30pm. News of Lee Junki's appearance became a hot topic after it broke out.
On 4th of February 07, Lee Junki did an exclusive interview with Sinar where he talks about his visit to China, his rise to fame and everything all netizens would wish to know about him.
It was an explosive and exciting interview session we had that day. Although it was a short interview for only 40 minutes, but the moment Lee Junki appeared, the number of messages left by the fans was simply overwhelming, causing the server to malfunction for a while. This serves to see the degree of popularity and attractiveness of this Korean guy, Lee Junki.

Below is the actual recording for that day:
Host: A warm welcome to all netizens of Sina! The special guest we have with us today is definitely a star today, and he is no other than the one and only, Lee Junki! Welcome, Lee Junki. Please say a few words of greetings!
JK: Hello everyone, I am Lee Junki, very happy to see all of you here.
Host: To be able to look at Lee Junki at such a near distance is definitely very different from looking at the TV or silver screen. He is much better looking here with fantastic skin!
JK: Thank you
Lee Junki thank all fans, feels the warmth from Chinese fans

Host: Did you see many of your fans at the airport and hotel yesterday?
JK: I saw many of my fans yesterday, I have seen many of them before. Like the previous year, many fans came and I am very thankful to all of them!
Host: What is your main purpose for coming to Shanghai this time round, could you please explain more about it to the netizens?
JK: This time I have a TV photo shoot, so there will be a simple press conference and a fans meeting session too. I heard that many people like Lee Junki, so here I am to see them.
Host: I supposed this is the second time you have been to Shanghai. What is your impression of China and Shanghai?
JK: I always felt very surprised whenever I come to China, as I feel that China had developed herself very rapidly; there are many changes. I also felt that there are certain places which are even much better than Korea. The Chinese fans are very passionate and I always felt very close to them whenever I come here.
Host: This is your second visit to Shanghai. You have not been to Beijing yet and there are many die-hard fans of yours over there. Do you have any plans to expand your career over there?
JK: Personally I would also like to visit Beijing. However there is no official activity organized over there. If there is, I will definitely go, at the same time I would like to see all of my fans in China.
Lee Junki immersed himself in all of the roles he plays

Host: One cannot help but mentioned the movie 'The King and the Clown' in the same breath when one talks about Lee Junki. Could also say that the role you played in this movie marks the milestone of your career. On a personal note, how do you judge yourself on this movie?
JK: I feel that it is not up to me to judge or comment on the movies. If you want me to assess, well it's the same for all to me, I do not know right from the start if my works will be successful or not. What I can do is to immerse myself in my roles, act as well as I could and let the audience appraise and judge. The comments by the viewers resulted in the success of 'The King and The Clown'.
Host: In 'The King and the Clown', the role of Gong-gil you played is a rather effeminate character. Did you feel pressurized when you decide to take on this role?
JK: This is a very lucky role for me. If I had performed badly, it may evoke negative reactions from the viewers. I felt very pressurized in the beginning.
Host: Besides 'The King and the Clown', China viewers are also very familiar with 'My Girl'. This is a totally different kind of show as compared to 'The King and the Clown' . How did you prepare yourself to act out these 2 vastly different characters?
JK: The character I portray in 'My Girl' is someone who tries as much as possible to show one's own charismatic appeal. He is also someone who is very fashionable. As compared to the role of Gong-gil, this role is much simpler and easier to portray.
Host: I see that you are not wearing your signature earrings today.
JK: Actually this is according to each individual's preferences to dressing. Occasionally I do change different types of accessories. Personally I like such types of earrings, necklaces etc
Host: You tried to break through the stereotype image u had after 'The King and the Clown'. 'Fly Daddy' is a good example. How do you appraise your own performance on these 2 shows?
JK: Actually I was contracted to act in 'Fly Daddy' before 'The King and the Clown'. At that time I didn't really read the script, just felt that the storyline seems pretty fun and that the theme pretty suitable for me, hence I accepted the role. On the other hand, my co-actor is Lee Mun Shik, someone whom I admire greatly and I had always wanted to have a chance to act opposite him; to learn from him.
Host: So between this 2 works of yours, which one do you prefer?
JK: I like both of them.
Awaits the release of 'Virgin Snow'

Host: You participated in the joint production between Japan and Korea; 'Virgin Snow'. Your fans are eagerly waiting for the release of this movie. Could you tell us a bit more about this movie?
JK: This is actually a joint production between Japan and Korea. It talks about a romance between a Korean guy and a pretty Japanese girl, although there was a language barrier between these 2 parties. This movie has a feel of youth vitality in it.
Host: Besides the shows mentioned earlier that you had participated before, what other types of roles do you hope to undertake in the near future?
JK: I will not set what type of roles I will play. I belong to the 1980s, in my 20s. I wish to take on many different and challenging roles around this age group. With regards to undertaking roles in a different age group, I am not too ambitious or greedy yet, all I want is to take on a variety of roles within my age group.
Host: Do you have any favorite Chinese serials or movies although you seldom come to China?
JK: Actually I belonged to those who grew up watching Chinese idol dramas.
Host: Hongkong movies?
JK: That's right. Hence it is difficult for me to state which ones I prefer. Also I feel that I am one who is quite familiar with the Chinese culture, that China and Korea aren't too far apart; both are very close to my heart
Hopes to work together with Chen Kaige, likes and hopes to learn Chinese
Host: Do you have any Chinese directors or actors that you wished to work together with?
JK: Actually I know that there are many esteemed directors. It would be great if I could have the chance to work with each director. However if I could only choose one, I guess I would like to work with Chen Kaige. I mentioned this before last year too.
Host: Did you learn Chinese before last time?
JK: Nope, I didn't learn before. I feel that the Chinese characters are very difficult. But I feel that speaking Chinese is pretty fun, would like to try learning.
Host: I feel that Lee Junki has a natural gift for languages
JK: Itfs not that I am intelligent, but I love to imitate things I saw and liked. I went before to many countries, including China's Taiwan, Japan, etc. If I have more chances to visit China, I will try my best to learn Chinese. The next time I visit Shanghai, I will learn more Chinese words to say to everyone here.
Host: We wait with anticipation. Could Lee Junki please say, 'Have you eaten'? in Chinese please?
JK: Okay. 'Have you eaten?' The way to pronounce this is not that good, so I must make sure to pronounce this in the correct intonation.
Will not move into the music industry at the moment but concentrates on improving his own acting skills

Host: We got to know that Lee Junki is accomplished actor through 'The King and the Clown'. That he is also someone who is constantly concerned for others. However we now realize that you are able to sing and dance very well too! Have you any plans to break into the music industry as well?
JK: I am not sure if this is what many of my fans are eagerly anticipating for, but I feel that I am still young. I still have many things to learn to improve on my acting skills, so I will improve myself constantly. I am interested in performing on stage. I will wait till I am more mature and comfortable to perform for the audience and my fans on stage.
Host: Recently we see many Korea stars such as Ahn Seong Gi and Choi Si Won in 'Battle of Wits', Jeon Ji Hyun and Jung Woo Sung in 'Daisy' etc. Do you have any plans as well?
JK: Actually regardless of whether is it a Korean, Japan or China's drama, there will be many chances for both parties to work together. I am very interested to try too.
Lee Junki likes to do exercises that let him perspire a lot, unyielding towards activities that involves betting.

Host: Everyone knows that Lee Junki has many activities in Korea; and he seldom visit China. Many Chinese fans would like to know what your advancement plans in China are
JK: I am one who enjoys challenges and would like to try out new things. Since there are so many chances in China, I will definitely come here again more often. Actually my aim is not only China, but also the whole of Asia. (SINGAPORE!! SINGAPORE!!) I like the feeling of running here and there. However I know that I am not qualified to do so yet. Once I have this capability, I will take on this challenge.
Host: Let us talk about something else besides work related matters. We would like to know what types of girls does Lee Junki prefers?
JK: My preferences kept changing! It is very difficult to state what type of girls I like right now as I may change my mind again after this interview! I am not sure how to explain this but I think to me the first impression she gives me is very important.
Host: What type of exercises do you like to do?
JK: I like exercises that allow me to sweat. (Laughs) I like to work out, especially those exercises that allow me to perspire. Also, if there is a bet involved; especially if there is money involved, it would be much better. Very often I do things that involve some forms of betting, as whenever there is a bet involved, I will be very rigid. (ahh another vice kekeke)
Learns Taekwondo from Father from young, tries if possible not to use a body double
Host: we all know that Lee Junki is very skilled in taekwondo. Did you learn when you were very young?
JK: I learnt taekwondo with my father when I was very young as martial arts could strengthen my body, so I started from young, up till now
Host: There were many action scenes in 'Fly Daddy', Did you undertake those scenes yourself? Or did you use a body double?
JK: Actually unless the scenes are too dangerous that will endanger or hurt me in such a way that I will affect the filming of the entire movie or drama, I will try my best to do the scenes myself. I feel that by using a double, somehow it snatches away parts of my own acting, so I will try my best to finish the scenes myself. Regardless of whether others may think I am putting on airs, I will try not to use any body double.
Drinking and singing to de- stress

Host: For someone who faces a lot of pressure every day, what do you does when you feel stress and how do you vent your frustrations? Is it Taekwondo?
JK: I drink and I love to sing too. Firstly, I will finish up my drink to compose my emotions, and then when I am very happy I will sing to my heart's content! I like songs that have a lively tune and will sing those songs that are higher in pitch, resulting in me feeling very tired and I will perspire. In the end its all about letting me sweat it all out!
Host: Do you often faced much pressure in your life?
JK: Perhaps outsiders had always felt that I faced too much pressure, but I do not feel that way. If I am able to alleviate my burdens, pressure after it had accumulated in my self after so long, I'm still pretty happy.
Host: There are many fans here in China who likes Lee Junki, mainly because you are a single-eye lid man. Do you know what is the reason behind this?
JK: I'm not sure
Host: Many netizens said that although Lee Junki has single eye lids, yet have a pair of 'electrifying eyes.'
JK: Thank you. (laughs)
Host: On behalf of the vast netizens of Sina, I would like to request Lee Junki to wink in a flirtatious way , to show us your 'electrifying eyes'.
JK: As my eyes are pretty small, I think that people cannot see it if I try to wink flirtatiously. Perhaps it could be better if I have double eye lids!

We could only managed such a short interview with Lee Junki today, really can't bear to part with him. The last segment of today's interview is the exchanging of presents. I would like to show the present Lee Junki has prepared to the netizens of Sina; 20 personally autographed pictures of Lee Junki which I am sure that all of you will like it very much. I will only display a portion of it, as all of you can properly see, its very beautiful, a total of 5 different styles. After the interview, I will be conducting a session where all interested netizens to please leave down you real name and addresses where we will pick and give you these sets of Junki's pictures. Thank you Lee Junki for giving us such beautiful pictures of yourself.
We will also be giving Lee Junki a present from Sina. I am not sure if you had seen this before, it is a 'Chinese Knot'. This is the most unique gift from China. It represents our best wishes to you that your future will be ever bright and shinning, and do come to China more often in the future.
There is another present, very pretty, from one side it looks like a Chinese knot, on the other side it looks a bit like the mask used in 'The King and the Clown'.
JK: I am very touched by the present. Actually I am very interested in Peking Opera. Although I have not learnt it before, I feel that Peking Opera will be very useful to my acting, so I wish to have a chance to learn it.
Host: We specially brought this back from Beijing, hope that you will like it and keep it with you.
JK: Thank you! I like it very much! I will hang this at home.
Host: Thank you. Today's interview shall now come to an end, thank you Lee Junki, thank you netizens of Sina
JK: Thank you.

Host: As the Lunar New Year is fast approaching, could Lee Junki say a few words of greetings to the netizens of Sina?
JK: I wished everyone here Happy New Year! May everyone be blissful and happy!
{2007) Hanavi Interview
Q: The year 2006 is termed as the year of Lee Junki, winning many best newcomer and popularity awards. Which is the one you like best among these numerous awards?
JK: I am happy to win any award. (laughs). If I have to choose one award, it will have to be the most popular actor award in Daejong Awards. I am already very happy if I win an award, not to mention that “The King and the Clown” too won many awards that night, definitely a joyous occasion.
Q: What were your thoughts when you won the Best Couple Award together with Gam Woo-Sung during the 27th Blue Dragon Film Awards?
JK: Of course, that was an extremely meaningful award. (laughs)For that was an award given by the fans (awarded as a result of votes by fans). To once again be given an award together with my senior, I feel that this award is a confirmation on the excellent chemistry both of us shared during the filming
Q: Year 2006 is the year where Lee Junki created a fashion wave for wearing crosses, and this certainly had a great influence on the men.
JK: I’m not that sure about this so called “fashion wave” I have created, nor was that my intention at all. I’m just a normal person wearing a cross on my neck. However, I do feel honored that there are people discussing about this topic.
Q: On the other hand, it seems that the image “A man prettier than a woman” has been ingrained in the minds of audiences; do you think this has its negativity?
JK: It is just like this cross; it has a fixed image. I suppose what I have today is more or less due to my image. Right now, my aim is to try to change my current image. I promise I will try to come out with different types of images to meet my audiences..
Q: You had not rested within the past year, acting in dramas such as My Girl” and the movie, “Fly Daddy” after “The King and the Clown”. Is it a bid to change your current image?
JK: Yes, 50% is to try to get away from that image, another 50% is not to let. I am still a relatively new actor and there are still many things for me to learn. I cannot rest on my laurels but hope to learn new things from different roles. As an actor, I am just starting out; I am only on the starting line. I can only bring my acting skills to a greater height by taking on new roles.
Q: I heard that for the sake of the drama serial, “Time of the Dog and Wolf”, you are not able to appear in any other drama serials. What is this drama all about?
JK: The drama is about a young man who joins the underworld in a bid for revenge. This theme is what I have been waiting to do for a very long time, not to mention that I like the story plot too. Also I feel that up till today, there isn’t another similar production such as this, hence I’m really looking forward to this
Q: You are dieting for the sake of your next drama?
JK: I didn’t do it for any reason; I had to lose a bit of weight for the role; at the same time beef up my muscles so that I can portray the role of someone who is very agile.
Q: I heard before that Lee Junki would like to have short hair.
JK: Previously, I did have such an idea to cut my hair shorter. However due to my new role, I had to maintain my hairstyle. It is necessary for an actor to have changes in his image; to suit my hairstyle to a role I undertake isn’t something I have not tried before.
Q: You rap for a certain mobile phone commercial and gained recognition for it, have you thought of releasing an album?
JK: I did release 3 songs during my fan meeting; however that isn’t an actual album. Even in the near future, I will not have such an idea, to release any album for I get nervous when I stand in front of a crowd; and there isn’t much possibility for me to stand on stage and sing. I suppose I will only sing and dance for fan meeting purposes, otherwise, I will appear to my fans as an actor.
Q: Did you learn how to dance in the past?
JK:I did learn before while I was still a student learning the finer arts of acting. I feel very happy that I am able to put to use what I have learnt before. Also, I do feel that my performance is not that bad either. (laughs)
Q:In the year 2006, somehow you are always in the limelight no matter what you did, with specific mention of the Pomegranate commercial. After it was aired, sales exceed 10 billion won within a short 35 days, resulting in a new record.
JK: That was certainly amazing! I totally didn’t think that it will be so well received by the audiences. Also after that was aired, there were people imitating me , i felt so shy and i think to myself, is that how it looks? (laughs)
Q: Do you have many male fans besides female fans?
JK: It’s so embarrassing if you want me to say this out of my own mouth. I ever received letters from guys who treats me as a female, stating that I am their idea partner. However I do enjoy reading it. (laughs)
Q: Your acting is really outstanding in “My Girl”! You appeared sharing a hot and passionate kiss with a Caucasian lady
JK: Actually, that was my virgin screen kiss! (laughs) I was so nervous, resulting in numerous NGs. What you see on television is different from real life. How am I supposed to enact out a steamy passionate kiss?? It is so difficult.
Q: I see that you can run very fast in the drama serial. How long do you take to complete a 100 meters dash?
JK: Oh! I am pretty fast in real life too! About 10 seconds… (Junki’s manager said, that’s not true! That is the time taken by a Korean national sprinter)
Ok ok, I’ll say this properly. (laughs) I think it should be about 13 seconds. Anyway, I am always in the third placing when I was studying in school
Q: Seo Jung-woong is very skilled in fighting! In reality, are you an expert in fighting too?
JK: I don’t really remember as I always insist on exercising. When I was still a student, I don’t fight at all; in fact I am a very good and honest student! (laughs)
Q: In “My Girl”, Seo Jung-woong is a playboy, how about you in real life?
JK: I am definitely not a playboy, and will not. If I have a girlfriend, she is the only one I will look at. A playboy, to have 2 girlfriends and keep them away from knowing one another requires a quick-witted mind. My brain is definitely not that quick witted. (laughs)
Q: In “My Girl”, Seo Jung- woong is very steadfast in his love, in reality, how does Lee Junki treats women?
JK: It totally depends... I will use different methods , depending on the situation. I will try to create an intimate atmosphere, before I confess my feelings to her.
Q: This is really the way spoken from an expert! Have you succeed before?
JK: Yes, I have tried this before, so far, it seems my luck isn’t that bad! (laughs)
Q:In the drama “My Girl”, Seo Jung-woong once said that a woman often behaves reserved to attract men. Does Lee Junki feel the same way too?
JK: Yes, no matter what happens in any circumstances, if one is too open, i may feel disgusted with her. Hence, a person who is too open-minded is not someone I like.
Q: Your idea girl is someone who is innocent and pure, this ideal differs from someone such as Joo Yoo-rin, am I correct?
JK: Actually it isn’t such a bad idea to have someone who differs from my ideal partner. An ideal girlfriend may only exist in my mind that’s all. In reality, such a person may not exist, isn’t it?
Q: What is the most impressive scene in “My Girl”?
JK: It should be at the end, after I wished Joo Yoo-rin all the best and leaves the scene. I feel that a real man is someone who is able to leave behind the woman he loves most.
Q: You participated in the joint production between Japan and Korea, “Virgin Snow”. As compared to “The Hotel Venus”, what do you feel are the differences between them?
JK:I feel more open and am able to joke around with the director and the crew members. Well, as compared to when I just started out from “The Hotel Venus”, filming “Virgin Snow” does require a greater level of my acting skills.
Q: Did you watch any of your co-star, Aoi Miyazaki’s works before ?
JK: I didn’t really understand before the start of the filming of “Virgin Snow”. The director did show me details of the other actors and actresses. It was only much later did I watch one of her movies for the first time. Her role in “NANA” left the deepest impression on me. Although I did not like such a role, I was impressed by her astute acting. It led me to feel that she has very mature acting skills although she is still very young.
Q: Do you chat in private with her?
JK: Of course. I had many interaction scenes with her when we were filming “Virgin Snow”. If I could, I will chat with her in Japanese while she will try to speak to me in Korean. Out of a 12 hours filming, I spent 1o hours talking to her. Please do not misunderstand that we share any secret conversations. I only feel that it is much better for us to bridge any distance between us, to get to know her better. If possible, I try to tell her a few jokes too
Q: Have you ever thought of falling in love with a Japanese girl?
JK: Well, there is a possibility. Nationality is no barrier to love. I find that Japanese girls are very firm in their own ideas and thinking, yet at the same time have their quiet and gentle moments (We have quiet and gentle Singaporean girls here too you know..)
Q:I heard that you like Japanese movies and drama serials. What are you watching presently?
JK: Currently I am re-watching what I have seen before; such as “Pride”. (actually Junki did mention another but I'm unable to find out the actual name in English, my apologies)
Q: What other types of roles do you wish to try in the future?
JK: I would like to try on many roles. Actually, this is a difficult question as I’m not too sure what types of roles are more suitable for me at this moment. If it is possible, I would like to try on more challenging roles.
Q: What are your dreams for the year 2007?
JK: As an actor, I wish to advance further in my career. I will be satisfied even if I only achieve half of my success in 2006. Lastly, I wish that the people around me will be healthy.
JK: I am happy to win any award. (laughs). If I have to choose one award, it will have to be the most popular actor award in Daejong Awards. I am already very happy if I win an award, not to mention that “The King and the Clown” too won many awards that night, definitely a joyous occasion.

(OCTOBER 2006) Showtime Japan Interview
Q:The most ground breaking in the history of Korea will be released in Japan, how do you feel now?
A: Feel very good. Hope it will move the Japanese fans, of course have the confidence of this movie succeeding it. This movie has received a lot of audience's affection, if it also has the same affection in Japan, I will be very happy. To describe what's the feeling now, it's the shaking due to nervouness, it's a very good feeling.
Q:Give a very lovely feelings, what to take note when portraying a female character?
A:In fact is I orginally a straightforward character, a very manly character. But in this movie, have to be hopfully as a neutral character. I orginally very manly, I won't dare to say what the feeling of portraying a female character but is it allow to have a little of being a neutral gender make me very doubtful, I can only observe women's delicate mannerism. For the sake of the character's image in this movie, I also look into other movies but there's no other characters that are similar, unable to observe. So I can only observe and learn about actresses' acting skills, especially the expression performance of the eyes.
Q:The training of this artistry skills very laborious?
A:The special training is in fact very laborious and the time is short. Have to gain a lot of skills in such a short time, the process of hard work is getting bigger, but won't be greedy to learn it faster, use a mindset of imitation to learn, minus my part, Gam Woo Sang shih rope-walking skills scenes are a lot more, so I feel Senior Woo Sang's parts are more laborious.
Q:In Daejung Awards records, you are the one who won most with the awards, Jun Ki himself also received the Popularity Award, how do you feel about this?
A:Very panicky, completetly unaware of what's happening. Before Daejung Awards, I had already attended other Awards Ceremonies, have the experience of receiving awards, also hope "The King and the Clown" itself will receive even more awards, only when receivng a lot of awards will feel lady luck is shining. The opposite of being happy is overpraised, overall is very happy.
Q:Receiving awards, before and after, is there any changes in reactions of surroundings and work?
A:In compare the changes that receiving the awards, the release of this movies are even greater, For example "syndrome" (unusual phenomenon) and "sensational" (stirring up characteristics), after had experienced those, after receiving the awards has no more feelings. Only hope "The King and the Clown" itself will have even more awards..if say that participating the filming of this movie, the conclusion is, has noticed the surrounding has changes, a lot of people know me and job opportunities have increased. There's a lot of movies has knocked my door and also take into good consideration about the path of my acting skills are leading to.
Q:It's going to air in Japan soon, what do you hope the Japanese audience to take note of which part in the movie?
A:This movie has no special specification partof (Please take note of here). Only hope it will stirred people's heartstrings into this movie. Please maintain a straight view while watching this movie. After finishing, will feel "It's this kind of moving feelings", and it's not from here (This part is very moving). This is a movie that is 100% that credit to the audience.
Q:Please say some words for the audience in ShowTime.
A:(In Japanese)The audience in ShowTime, first time we met, I am Lee Jun Ki. Very happy to meet all of you. (2006) Mainichi 'The King of the Clown' Interview
Q:What did you feel was the reason as to why you were selected for the role of Gonggil?
JK: Well, according to the director, he saw in me an ability to bring anticipation and hope to him. At the same time, I seem to be quite nonchalant and fearless as even when acting opposite more experienced actors or performing dangerous stunts, I am able to solve any difficulties myself. This is how the director sees me.
Q:Nonchalant? Fearless? Is that how you live your personal life too?
JK: (Thinks for a while) Come to think of it, it does seem pretty embarrassing to say that for I certainly am quite fearless in nature. I had always had this thinking that I must always be better than others. I want to improve myself constantly; perhaps it’s because I am very competitive in nature.
Q:How did you feel when you finally got the role of Gonggil?
JK: First of all I felt very happy! It’s like I have finally won! However at the same time I felt extremely pressurised and often had many sleepless nights during the filming process.
Q:You danced and walked across the tightrope in the movie. What did you do to prepare yourself for all these?
JK: I studied 7 different types of skills in order to cope with the demands of filming. In order to ensure that I am able to at least act out my role reasonably well when filming commenced, I did not rest at all and kept practising every day for the past 2 months. It was very hectic.
Q:I heard that you are a fan of Bruce lee and Jackie Chan. Does having a background in martial arts help you in this role?
JK: I learned before aikido, Tae Kwon Do and Taekkyeon (another form of Korean martial arts). Perhaps this is the reason why I am able to learn things much faster.
Q:Is it true that the reason you took up martial arts is because Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee are both your idols?
JK: I used to think that as a guy, one cannot just know martial arts, to know the martial arts movements alone is not enough. In addition, one must also have the ability to protect one’s own family members. This is what makes a real man.
Q:Was there any danger when you had to walk across the tightrope during the filing of “The King and the Clown”?
JK: Well... as there was a huge cushion laid below, so I can do somersaults in the air with no fear of falling down. But there was once when I fell and hurt my thigh badly. At that moment I thought I was that close to not being able to have any descendants!
Q:Has Gam Woo-sung and Jeong Jin-yeong, being more experienced actors than you gave you any valuable pointers?
JK: Before filming commenced for “The King and the Clown”, I did some preparations myself and my seniors too gave me many valuable pointers on how to further improve my role, to give it more punch and substance.
Q:Being such a nonchalant and a person who doesn’t seem to fear anything, are you able to accept any criticisms from your seniors calmly?
JK: There is a difference between being nonchalant and respect for my seniors. No matter how capable I am, I cannot ignore the teachings of my seniors. I will accept all comments or criticisms that my seniors and the people I respect in my heart, for I believe that their teachings and constructive criticisms is the path for me to grow and be a much better actor.
Q:Oh yes, right from the start of this interview, I noticed that you kept looking at me in a very strange way. Whenever I caught your gaze, my heart seems to beat very fast. Are your eyes all right?
JK: I underwent laser surgery. Hence I can now see very clearly. In fact right now I too have this “see through” ability.
Q:Really? What do you want to “see through”?
JK: (Stares intently at my face)….. I only want to look at your face right now...
Q:(Trying very hard to regains composure) It does help you a lot to have such a pair of charming eyes in your acting, doesn’t it?
JK: The eyes are known as the windows to the soul, isn’t it? Hence, although I do not know if I have such a pair of attractive eyes, I do know that if I use my eyes effectively, it will improve and open up my acting skills. I feel that in this way I can add more depth to my acting, so I will continue to improve in this manner.
Q:You are presently in Kyoto filming “Virgin Snow”. Is the filming going on smoothly? (Note that this interview was conducted in September 06)
JK: No, it isn’t going smoothly at all. (Gave a grave look)
Q:(Shocked)What? It isn’t going smoothly??
JK: Hahaha, isn’t this answer what you wanted to hear from me??
Q:….. How did you get along with the lead actress Aoi Miyazaki?
JK: Are you going to ask about the rumours of us in love?
Q:Speechless…..
JK: (Laughs) Well, we got along very well during filming.
Q:At an earlier press conference, Gam Woo-sung remarked that as Lee Junki’s lips are simply to beautiful, he kept focusing on your lips and tend to forget his lines. So what is your secret to maintain your lips?
JK: Hmm, well, I will maintain my lips when I have a girlfriend. Since I do not have one at the moment, no special maintenance is needed at all right now
Q:Lastly, please recommend to the reporters here which is the MOST exciting part of “The King and the Clown”
JK: I am afraid that even if I mentioned a particular part of the movie that you should watched especially, I am sure that you all will finished watching the entire movie; it is simply not possible to pick out any particular part. (Laughs)
Anyway, this is a movie that everyone puts in their best to film and produced and I hope that everyone will enjoy this movie right up till the end.

(2006) Cinematoday Japan 'The King and the Clown' Interview
The movie, “The King and the Clown” which had swept across Korea’s box office
Will finally premiere on 9th of December 2006 across Japan’s cinemas.
Production costs were pretty modest at approximately $4.5 million dollars.
And it was the highest grossing Korean film in history with 12.3 million viewers
Until “The Host” surpassed the record in the second half of 2006
The King and the Clown is a period film set in the Chosun dynasty during the 16th century.
It tells the story of two itinerant jesters who end up performing at the court of a slightly mad king
And gets entangled into a web of jealousy and love between them.
And the actor who played the beautiful Gonggil
Is non other than Lee Junki who once acted in “Hotel Venus”
He is the one who shot to fame after the movie “The King and the Clown”.
Below is the interview conducted after Lee Junki arrives in Japan
Q: How do you feel after attending PIFF and TIFF consecutively?
JK:I feel very happy.
Regardless of whether it is PIFF or TIFF
I still feel very honored but yet very nervous
Luckily for me, there were many fans at TIFF to support and cheer me on
For if there were no fans present, I would surely be very nervous. (laughs)
Q: During TIFF, “The King and the Clown” was the first movie to be shown on screen.
As for yourself, how did you feel when you first saw this show?
JK: Well, I felt pretty shy and embarrassed. (laughs again)
Whenever I watched the show, I always have think to myself that I could have acted or performed much better in some of the scenes
However I was very lucky that there were many experienced actors and director around to help me cover up many of my flaws
Q: It is actually very difficult for historical films to gain popularity in Japan.
What is the reason you felt that led practically every household in Korea to watch “The King and the Clown”?
JK: Well, this is indeed a historical film.
However I felt that this movie is just like “The Scandal”
That reflects the present time situation
At the same time each and every of the actors who acted in “The King and the Clown” do have their own unique charm.
Most important of all, this is a movie of great substance
Q: The media constantly introduces this movie as a homosexual. What do you have to say about this?
JK: One should not make such a sweeping statement. For I feel that a good movie will be able to present its own unique charm. I wish to make use of this character Gonggil
To judge myself on my own acting skills. Naturally not everyone will view things the same as each other. But then, I am sure at least the underlying feeling is that this is a good movie.
Q: Although the character Gonggil is a male, you have managed to turn this character to a more androgynous look when acting as a feminine actor What are the problems you faced when you undertook this role?
JK: Perhaps it’s the unique small gestures and the way the females move their eyes
Also I feel that to break away from the image of Gonggil in the minds of many people
Is definitely not an easy task for me.
Q: When you took on the role as Gonggil, did you discuss about how you should go about preparing for this role, or did you take it on all by yourself?
JK: I did ask many people for their advice,
As I felt that my own acting is still not up to par, definitely no.
Hence I will consult my seniors and the producers during the meeting for their advice
And then consolidate their inputs and put it in my acting of Gonggil.
Q: If this is the case, what did you study in with regards to the females’ gestures and movements?
JK: I tried to go on to the web to search for similar movies
I also studied Hong Kong actor, Leslie Chung’s acting
In actual fact however, it is near impossible to search for a role as similar to Gonggil
Especially the eyes..
I have to study many female actresses to learn.
Q: So after acting the role of Gonggil, are there any differences when you look at women now?
JK: Well, as long it is a woman its fine for me.
Of course this isn’t what I meant exactly. (chuckles)
I can’t erase my habit of studying the feminine mannerisms of women
Previously I will feel very shy whenever I looked into a woman’s eyes
But after I had learned the art of “acting with eyes”,
The other party will always joked that I looked very “scary” (laughs again)
Q: The image of Gonggil is firmly imprinted in the minds of many people who watched the show. Thus do you also feel that this is a very effeminate character?
JK: As regardless of whether the pictures or mannerisms of Gonggil certainly looks like a woman.
There is nothing I can do about it I guess.
On the other hand,
I do feel quite happy to be able to give people such an image
Q: Will you demonstrate any female actions now and then unknowingly after the role of Gonggil?
JK: No, not at all now.
I have tried my best and had successfully
I really tried my best.
In that past half a year while I was filming “The King and the Clown”
I had to behave like a woman,
To cross my legs when I seat, exhibiting a gentle and delicate behavior,
To smile gently
Finally I managed to erase all that successfully within 2 months after the movie had finished filming
Q: What type of girls does Lee Junki like or prefer?
JK: Well, I like girls who have charisma.
Q: Is that all? You have only one condition? For her just to possess her own charisma and personality?
JK: Well, it would be a plus point if she has a cute face too. (laughs)
Q: You have kept your skin in top condition. Could you tell us what is the secret to your fantastic skin?
JK: The truth is, there isn’t any secret at all.
When I was filming Gonggil, I had to take special care of my face
But I didn’t realized that it is so troublesome
All I did is to sleep more to diminish my tiredness
Anyway I am still young. (laughs)
Q: What plans do you have for the next 10 years?
JK: I hoped that I can still continue acting
To do what I love to do
I will also find time to travel
And hope that I can live a happy and fufilling life.
”
Thank you very much”
“You have all worked hard”
Lee Junki spoke in fluent Japanese.
As the “The King and the Clown”
Has led Lee Junki to become one of the hottest stars in Korea,
And at the same time he had received many dramas, movies, commercials invitations
At the same time he is also involved in the filming of “Virgin Snow”
It shouldn’t be long before Lee Junki achieves success in the year 2007.
